Standard PLA straws are primarily intended for cold drinks. Their heat resistance is lower than that of conventional PP straws, so beverage temperature, storage temperature and exposure time must be defined before approval. For hot drinks or broader composting conditions, paper, PHA or another certified material may be more suitable.
Compostability is certification- and facility-specific. A commercially compostable PLA straw should not be described as rapidly degrading in landfill, soil, rivers or oceans. Buyers should verify the exact finished straw, wrapper, ink and packaging claims for the destination market.

Straw length should extend above the lid enough for comfortable use without creating excessive leverage that bends the straw. For lid systems, confirm the slot or round-hole dimensions and test insertion force using the actual production lid.
Standard clear PLA softens at a lower temperature than PP. Several commercial PLA straw specifications limit use to cold drinks and list maximum temperatures around 40–43°C. PLA straws are commonly certified for commercial or industrial composting under standards such as ASTM D6400 or EN 13432. These facilities use controlled temperature, oxygen, moisture and processing time. Availability and acceptance vary by region.
