Roasted and ground coffee is sensitive to oxygen, humidity, light and aroma loss. The capsule body, lid and seal together determine how quickly the coffee changes during storage. A compostable material without a validated barrier may be suitable for short distribution but not for a long retail shelf-life target.

Sealing temperature, pressure and dwell time must be optimized on the actual equipment. A temperature copied from another capsule or film may under-seal the rim or damage the compostable material. The production window should tolerate normal variation in machine speed, coffee dust and capsule temperature.
