PVC/PE/PVDC high-barrier pharmaceutical packaging materials usually exist in the form of multi-layer composite structures, combining the advantages of the three materials. They are key packaging forms that meet the requirements of pharmaceuticals for barrier properties, safety, and stability. The specific characteristics are as follows:
1) High barrier property: With PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride) as the core barrier layer, it has significant barrier effects against oxygen, water vapor, carbon dioxide, etc., which can effectively prevent pharmaceuticals from oxidation, deliquescence, or contamination. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) provides mechanical strength and formability (such as blister shaping), while PE (polyethylene) serves as the inner layer or heat-sealing layer, utilizing its good heat-sealing property and flexibility to achieve sealing. The three work together to meet high barrier requirements.
2) Safety: All materials must meet pharmaceutical-grade standards, with strict control over the migration and residues of plasticizers, additives (such as adhesives and solvents) to ensure non-toxicity and harmlessness when in direct contact with pharmaceuticals, complying with the hygiene requirements for pharmaceutical packaging in pharmacopoeias of various countries.
Common composite structures include "PVC/PVDC composite film", "PE/PVDC composite film" or "PVC/PE/PVDC multi-layer composite", which are widely used in:
1) Blister packaging (composite hard sheets) for tablets and capsules, leveraging PVC's formability and PVDC's barrier property to extend the shelf life of pharmaceuticals;
2) Packaging bags for easily oxidizable and hygroscopic pharmaceuticals (such as composite flexible packaging), achieving sealing through the PE heat-sealing layer and blocking external moisture and gases via the PVDC layer;
3) Composite packaging for some liquid preparations, utilizing the chemical resistance and barrier property of the multi-layer structure to ensure the stability of pharmaceuticals.
Such materials not only give play to the core role of PVDC in high barrier property but also balance processability (such as forming and heat-sealing) and cost through the combination of PVC and PE. They are important choices in pharmaceutical packaging that take both performance and practicality into account, especially suitable for pharmaceuticals sensitive to storage environments and with long shelf life requirements.
1) Thickness: The total thickness after multi-layer compounding is usually 50~150μm, among which the PVDC layer thickness is 5~20μm (adjusted according to barrier requirements), the PVC layer is 20~60μm, and the PE layer is 15~50μm.
2) Form: Mainly in the form of coiled materials or pre-made bags. The common sizes of pre-made bags range from 10cm×15cm (small-dose herbal pieces) to 50cm×80cm (large-packaged medicinal materials). Customized special-shaped bags (such as stand-up bags, zipper bags) are also available.
3) Processing Characteristics: It supports printing (clearly marking the name, batch number, shelf life of medicinal materials, etc.) and easy-tear opening design (for convenient access). Some can withstand high-temperature cooking (121℃ sterilization), adapting to the sterilization needs of medicinal materials.
