As we approach the end of May, we are preparing to embrace one of China’s most culturally significant traditional holidays — the Dragon Boat Festival. This holiday is steeped in history, emotion, and a spirit of unity that has endured for thousands of years. From May 31st to June 2nd, our company will observe this national holiday. However, we remain available and warmly welcome customer inquiries during this period.

Let us take this opportunity to share the origins, customs, and cultural significance of the Dragon Boat Festival, while also informing our valued customers of our adjusted schedule.

What is the Dragon Boat Festival?

The Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, typically falls in late May or June on the Gregorian calendar. In 2025, it will be observed from May 31st to June 2nd, with celebrations taking place across China and other East Asian countries.

This holiday has a rich and layered history dating back more than 2,000 years. It is most commonly associated with the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, a loyal statesman from the Warring States period. After being falsely accused of treason and exiled from his kingdom, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River in despair. In response, locals raced out in boats to try to save him — or at least recover his body — and threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river to feed the fish and keep them from disturbing his remains.

Traditional Customs and Cultural Practices

1. Dragon Boat Racing

One of the most thrilling aspects of the holiday is the dragon boat races — long, narrow wooden boats adorned with dragon heads and tails. These high-energy races represent the villagers' desperate attempt to rescue Qu Yuan and have evolved into an internationally recognized sport and symbol of Chinese cultural heritage.

Dragon boat races are held across cities, rivers, and coastal areas, drawing both locals and tourists. The loud beat of the drum, the synchronized paddling, and the cheering crowds make for an unforgettable sight.

2. Eating  rice dumplings

Zongzi are glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, filled with various ingredients such as:

  • Sweet red bean paste

  • Jujube

  • Salted duck egg yolk

  • Pork belly

  • Mung beans

Each region has its own unique recipe, making zongzi a flavorful emblem of regional diversity within China.

3. Hanging Mugwort and Calamus

People hang mugwort and calamus on their doors to ward off evil spirits and disease. These herbs are believed to have medicinal properties, and their use reflects the ancient Chinese emphasis on balance between nature and health.

4. Wearing Fragrant Sachets

Children wear scented sachets filled with herbs to repel insects and bring good luck. These small but meaningful accessories are often sewn into intricate designs and symbolize care, protection, and well-being.

The Modern Significance of Duanwu Festival

Beyond the traditional elements, the Dragon Boat Festival has gained new relevance in modern times. It serves as a reminder of:

  • Loyalty and integrity, embodied by Qu Yuan

  • Community spirit, as reflected in the collective effort of villagers

  • Family unity, with families gathering to make and share zongzi

  • Health and protection, evident in rituals that echo ancient Chinese medicine

In 2009, UNESCO recognized the Dragon Boat Festival as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, further elevating its status globally and ensuring its preservation for future generations.
