What Is Holographic Metallic PVC Card Sheet?

Holographic metallic PVC card sheet is a decorative card-core material that combines rigid PVC with a reflective, diffractive or metallic visual layer. Light interacting with the surface creates rainbow colors, changing highlights, mirror reflections or directional patterns.

Depending on the product structure, the visual effect may be created by embossed holographic film, metallized film, pigment coating, printed optical pattern or a laminated decorative layer.

The sheet is normally printed, combined with transparent PVC overlay and laminated into a complete card structure. It can also be used as a decorative inner core where only selected areas of the effect remain visible.

Holographic PVC card sheet is different from transparent holographic overlay. Core sheet provides an opaque or semi-opaque decorative card layer, while holographic overlay is generally a thinner transparent protective film.

Holographic and Metallic Surface Options

Rainbow Holographic PVC Sheet

Rainbow holographic sheets create shifting spectral colors as the viewing angle or light direction changes. They are suitable for promotional, entertainment, fashion, gift and membership card designs.

Iridescent PVC Sheet

Iridescent surfaces provide smoother color transitions and a pearl-like or color-shifting appearance. The effect can be used beneath transparent inks or selectively covered with white ink.

Mirror PVC Sheet

Mirror PVC sheet offers a highly reflective appearance for premium business cards, VIP cards, luxury gift cards and special promotional projects. Surface handling and protective overlay selection are important because mirror effects can make scratches and fingerprints more visible.

Brushed Metallic PVC Sheet

Brushed metallic sheets reproduce the directional appearance of brushed metal while retaining the processability of PVC card material. Pattern direction should be stated when ordering.

Light Beam and Linear Holographic Patterns

Light-beam and linear effects create moving bands of reflected light. They are useful for modern card designs where a controlled directional effect is required.

Dot, Grid, Cube and Geometric Patterns

Repeating dot, grid, cube, mosaic and geometric structures provide a more organized optical pattern for branded membership, loyalty and promotional cards.

Customized Holographic Pattern

Customized logos, symbols, text or repeating patterns may be developed subject to artwork, tooling, minimum order quantity, technical feasibility and intellectual property review.

Key Features and Manufacturing Benefits

High-Impact Visual Appearance

Dynamic reflections and angle-dependent color effects help premium cards stand out from conventional white, transparent or solid-color PVC cards.

Selective Holographic Visibility

Designers can use opaque white ink to hide selected areas and transparent or semi-transparent colors to retain the holographic effect. This allows the same sheet to create both solid-color and reflective design zones.

Compatible with Laminated Card Production

Qualified sheets can be printed, stacked with compatible PVC core and overlay layers, hot laminated, cooled and punched into finished cards.

Custom Thickness and Sheet Layout

Thickness and sheet dimensions can be matched to the card-layer calculation, printing equipment, laminator plate, card imposition and punching format.

Multiple Finishing Processes

The finished structure can support die cutting, card punching, embossing, hot stamping, signature panels, barcodes, QR codes, magnetic stripes and selected chip processes after testing.

Consistent OEM Card Programs

Approved master samples and batch controls help maintain the required holographic pattern, color family, pattern direction, surface finish and sheet dimensions across repeat orders.

Printing on Holographic and Mirror PVC Sheets

White Ink Underprint

White ink is commonly used beneath logos, photographs, small text and brand colors when an opaque printed result is required. Areas without white ink can retain more of the holographic or metallic reflection.

Transparent and Semi-Transparent Ink

Transparent colors allow the reflective base to remain visible through the printed image. The final color will differ from printing on a white sheet, so physical proofs are required.

Offset and UV Offset Printing

Offset or UV offset printing may be used with a suitable printable surface, ink and curing process. Ink adhesion and lamination bonding must be evaluated after the printed sheet is fully cured.

Screen Printing

Screen printing is suitable for opaque white ink, spot colors, dense graphics and specialty coatings. Thick ink deposits can influence layer bonding and should be included in lamination testing.

UV Digital Printing

UV digital printing can support short runs, variable images and customized graphics. Primer, white ink, curing energy and surface adhesion must be matched with the selected PVC grade.

Digital Toner and Indigo Printing

Digital toner and Indigo compatibility depends on the specific surface treatment. A generic holographic sheet should not be assumed to work with every digital printing system.

Print Proof Approval

The approved sample should confirm white coverage, color appearance, holographic visibility, pattern orientation, ink adhesion, registration and appearance after lamination.

Recommended Card Production Process

1. Confirm the Card-Layer Structure

Calculate the thickness of the front overlay, printed holographic PVC layer, internal core or inlay, rear printed layer and rear overlay.

2. Confirm Pattern Direction

Mark the intended top, bottom, machine direction and card orientation before printing. Directional brushed and light-beam patterns can appear inconsistent if sheets are rotated.

3. Print the Holographic Sheet

Print the approved white base, color layers, text, logos and registration marks using the qualified ink and curing conditions.

4. Condition the Printed Sheets

Allow the ink to dry or cure fully. Residual solvent, uncured UV ink or surface contamination can reduce adhesion during lamination.

5. Stack with PVC Overlay

Stack the transparent coated overlay, printed holographic sheet and other card layers according to the approved structure and registration marks.

6. Laminate and Cool

Use the validated temperature, pressure, heating time, cooling time and lamination plates. Excessive temperature or pressure can change gloss, pattern appearance, flatness or layer adhesion.

7. Punch and Finish the Cards

Punch the laminated sheets and complete the required magnetic stripe, embossing, hot stamping, signature panel, barcode, QR code or chip process.

8. Inspect the Finished Cards

Inspect card dimensions, thickness, holographic direction, surface appearance, print registration, layer adhesion, flatness, edge quality and functional components.

RFID and NFC Card Compatibility

Holographic appearance does not always mean that the material contains a continuous conductive metal layer. Some effects are produced through pigments or non-conductive optical structures, while others use metallized film.

A conductive metallized layer can affect the antenna tuning, read distance and reliability of RFID or NFC cards. The impact depends on the metal coverage, layer position, antenna design, frequency and card structure.

For contactless cards, buyers should provide the chip, antenna drawing, operating frequency, target reading distance and reader model. The complete laminated card must be tested before mass production.

Possible solutions include selecting a non-conductive holographic grade, reducing metal coverage, adding an engineered window, changing the layer position or retuning the antenna.

Decorative Effects and Security Considerations

Standard Decorative Holographic Patterns

Stock rainbow, dot, cube and light-beam patterns provide visual distinction and can make casual reproduction more difficult. However, widely available stock patterns should primarily be treated as decorative features.

Customized Registered Holographic Pattern

A customized pattern containing a controlled logo, text or proprietary graphic can provide a more distinctive brand-protection feature when production tools and design files are properly controlled.

Layered Security Design

Higher-security cards can combine holographic material with UV printing, microtext, guilloche patterns, laser engraving, variable data, secure chips, QR verification or a controlled backend database.

Security Claim Limitation

Holographic appearance alone does not authenticate a card. The required security level must be designed according to the application, issuer, threat model, personalization process and verification system.

How to Select the Correct Holographic PVC Sheet

1. Define the Required Visual Effect

State whether the project requires rainbow diffraction, mirror reflection, brushed metal, iridescent color shift, light beam, geometric pattern or a customized holographic design.

2. Confirm the Card-Layer Thickness

Select the sheet thickness according to the front overlay, rear overlay, printed core layers, chip, antenna or other internal components and the target finished-card thickness.

3. Specify the Printing Method

Provide the printing technology, ink brand, white ink requirement, curing process and expected print coverage so the appropriate treated surface can be evaluated.

4. Confirm Pattern Direction

Provide a drawing showing the card orientation and desired pattern direction. This is especially important for brushed, linear and light-beam designs.

5. Confirm Sheet Dimensions

Match the sheet size with the printing machine, card layout, laminator plate, registration marks and punching equipment.

6. State the Card Technology

Inform Wallis whether the card will include a magnetic stripe, contact chip, RFID antenna, NFC inlay, signature panel, embossing or other functional components.

7. Approve a Physical Sample

Digital images cannot fully represent mirror reflection, holographic motion, pattern scale or iridescent color. A physical sample should be approved before bulk production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is holographic metallic PVC sheet?

It is a rigid PVC card material combined with a holographic, iridescent, mirror or metallic decorative layer. It is used to create reflective and angle-dependent visual effects on laminated plastic cards.

Is this product a PVC core sheet or an overlay?

This page primarily describes decorative PVC core sheet. Transparent holographic overlay is a different, thinner product used as a protective external layer.

What thickness is suitable for card manufacturing?

Common decorative core thicknesses include approximately 0.15mm, 0.18mm, 0.20mm and 0.30mm. The correct thickness depends on all card layers and the target finished-card thickness.

Can 0.76mm holographic PVC be used directly as a card?

A thicker sheet may be used in certain direct-printing or simplified card structures, but printing, surface protection, flatness, punching and final thickness must be tested.

Can holographic PVC sheets be printed?

Yes, when the sheet has a suitable printable treatment and is matched with the correct ink and curing process. Offset, screen, UV and selected digital printing methods can be evaluated.

Is white ink required?

White ink is recommended where opaque colors, photographs, fine text or accurate brand colors are required. Areas without white ink will show more of the reflective base.

Why do printed colors look different on metallic PVC?

The reflective substrate changes how light passes through or reflects from the ink. Transparent inks will interact with the metallic color, while opaque white ink can isolate the printed color from the background.

Can the holographic pattern be customized?

Yes. Customized logos, text, symbols and repeating patterns can be evaluated subject to artwork, tooling cost, minimum order quantity and technical feasibility.

Can the pattern direction be controlled?

Yes. Buyers should provide a drawing showing the required pattern direction relative to the card orientation and sheet layout.

Are holographic PVC sheets scratch-resistant?

Surface resistance depends on the decorative layer, coating, ink, protective overlay and handling conditions. Mirror surfaces can show scratches more clearly and should normally be protected in the finished card structure.

Are holographic PVC sheets waterproof?

PVC has good resistance to routine moisture, but the finished product's water resistance depends on the printed ink, decorative layer, edge sealing, overlay and complete card construction.

Can holographic PVC be laminated with standard PVC overlay?

It can be laminated with a compatible coated overlay after validating the ink, coating, temperature, pressure, heating time and cooling process.

Can holographic PVC be used for RFID or NFC cards?

It may be used, but metallized layers can affect antenna performance. The material structure, antenna, chip, frequency and finished-card read distance must be tested.

Does a holographic pattern make a card secure?

A standard holographic pattern mainly provides visual distinction. Stronger security requires controlled customized features, variable data, secure chips or a trusted verification system.

Can the material be embossed or hot stamped?

Embossing and hot stamping may be possible after lamination. Processing conditions should be tested to avoid surface cracking, distortion or damage to the decorative layer.

Can I receive samples before bulk production?

Yes. Physical samples are strongly recommended because holographic movement, mirror reflection, color shift and pattern scale cannot be accurately judged from screen images alone.

What information is required for a quotation?

Please provide the required effect, color, pattern, thickness, sheet dimensions, printing method, white ink plan, pattern direction, card structure, quantity, packaging and destination.
