What Is a PVC Offset Printing Sheet?

A PVC offset printing sheet is a rigid card-grade substrate formulated for printing, lamination and punching. In a typical card-production workflow, artwork is printed on the PVC sheet, combined with transparent overlays or other functional layers, laminated under controlled heat and pressure, and then punched into finished cards.

For B2B card manufacturers, the most important selection factors are not limited to thickness. Surface energy, surface roughness, dimensional stability, color consistency, Vicat softening temperature, ink adhesion and lamination bonding must work together with the selected ink, overlay and production equipment.

Technical Data and Typical Performance

The following values are typical specifications from the existing product range. Final tolerances and test methods should be confirmed on the approved technical data sheet for each order.

Item Direction / Grade Unit Typical Result
Thickness Standard / customized mm 0.10–0.85
Density Typical g/cm³ 1.42 ± 0.05
Tensile Strength Horizontal MPa ≥44
Vertical ≥46
Vicat Softening Temperature Ordinary card grade °C 78 ± 2
Bank card grade 74 ± 2
SIM card grade 90 ± 2
Surface Energy Typical minimum dynes/cm ≥34
Surface Roughness Ra μm 0.7–1.8
Rz 4.0–12

Why Surface Energy, Roughness and Vicat Matter

Surface Energy and Ink Adhesion

Adequate surface energy helps the selected ink wet the substrate consistently. Actual adhesion depends on the ink chemistry, press settings, curing conditions, storage history and surface cleanliness, so print and cross-hatch adhesion tests should be completed before bulk production.

Surface Roughness and Print Definition

Controlled matte roughness supports sheet handling and ink transfer while maintaining fine text, lines and color areas. The required Ra and Rz range should be matched to the press, ink film weight and visual standard of the finished card.

Vicat Grade and Lamination Window

Different card constructions may require different thermal behavior. The Vicat grade must be selected together with the transparent overlay, adhesive system, chip or inlay construction, lamination temperature, pressure and dwell time.

Recommended Printing and Lamination Workflow

  1. Confirm the material grade: Select thickness, color, Vicat, surface roughness and sheet size according to the final card construction.

  2. Condition and clean the sheets: Keep the material flat, dry and free from dust, oil and fingerprints before printing.

  3. Run a press trial: Verify ink wetting, curing, color density, fine text, registration and adhesion with the actual offset or screen-printing system.

  4. Build the complete structure: Combine the printed PVC layer with approved overlays, adhesives, inlays or other functional layers.

  5. Optimize lamination: Adjust temperature, pressure, dwell time and cooling according to the tested structure rather than using one universal setting.

  6. Approve finished cards: Check peel strength, flatness, color shift, cracking, warpage, punching quality and functional component performance before bulk production.
